Until now, medical protective masks were in short supply in Villingen-Schwenningen during the current corona crisis. This went so far that even patients\u00a0were\u00a0donating\u00a0masks to their doctors, whose supplies were simply used up. Germany has been caught cold by the coronavirus – protective clothing and masks are\u00a0unavailable\u00a0where you need them\u00a0the most. This is due to the fact that such items are mainly manufactured abroad and are currently in great demand all over the world. In Villingen-Schwenningen, the bottleneck has now largely been eliminated – thanks to “One\u00a0Point\u00a0Zero”\u00a0a company co-founded by\u00a0entrepreneur Eric Voigt. Voigt studied international business administration in\u00a0Schwenningen\u00a0and his\u00a0business\u00a0partner,\u00a0Markus Winter,\u00a0with me\u00a0today. The two mayors, J\u00fcrgen Roth, took great care\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that from now on,\u00a0mask deliveries can regularly arrive in Villingen-Schwenningen. This will primarily benefit medical staff who deal with corona-infected patients.\u00a0Low filtration or homemade masks are useless for doctors and nurses\u00a0who need\u00a0a high quality, face mask with a filter,\u00a0to effectively protect themselves against infection. The demand is currently immense, from simple mouthguards to medical protective masks. And even if simple masks do not protect against infection with the coronavirus, they are\u00a0in some cases being\u00a0auctioned\u00a0off\u00a0on the\u00a0internet at\u00a0incredibly\u00a0high\u00a0prices,\u00a0taking\u00a0advantage\u00a0of\u00a0people’s fear.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two Types of Masks in Clinics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Currently, two types of masks are used in\u00a0clinics: simple surgical masks made of fibre, which are intended to protect patients from the saliva of doctors and nursing staff during an operation, and\u00a0FFP2 and FFP3\u00a0protective masks (filtered respirators). These are made of firmer material and have a breathing valve. The coronavirus\u00a0particles\u00a0are\u00a0very\u00a0small, and only the FFP masks are\u00a0constructed\u00a0so that\u00a0they\u00a0cannot get through, experts say. Protective masks\u00a0with\u00a0FFP2\u00a0protection\u00a0are particularly popular in the corona crisis. Thanks to\u00a0the\u00a0innovative filter technology, breathing resistance remains low, and breathing is not impeded by trapped particles in the filter, even if the respirator is used several times\u00a0over. There are currently initiatives on social media to curb the spread of the corona virus through self-made protective masks. There are numerous videos and instructions on the\u00a0internet for this purpose. Private and publicly organized groups produce so-called makeshift mouth-nasal protective masks in large quantities,\u00a0specifically\u00a0in the distribution area of \u200b\u200bNECKARQUELLE (we reported).<\/h4>\n

Self-Made Masks Allow 700 Times More Virus Through\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Anyone who wears such a self-made face mask should not feel too safe: According to a recent study, an FFP2 mask only allowed 0.12 percent of the particles to pass through, whereas with\u00a0DIY\u00a0masks that were made from cotton, 74 to 90 percent\u00a0passed through. If you wear such a mask for your own protection, you inhale about 700 times more virus than with a professional respirator.<\/h4>\n

Experts agree that a\u00a0self-made\u00a0mask can only serve to significantly reduce the droplet flight in the exhaled air of the mask wearer\u00a0meaning that\u00a0they are not completely useless when it comes to blocking infection routes.\u00a0An already unknowingly infected person wearing\u00a0a self-made mask can at least reduce the risk to other people.\u00a0By wearing\u00a0them in nursing\u00a0homes, supermarkets\u00a0and\u00a0on\u00a0public transport,\u00a0you can at least offer\u00a0a certain security to those around you.<\/h4>\n

Many are currently using the sewing machine and making face masks themselves. However, they cannot protect their wearer from corona infection. This requires professional masks with an integrated filter.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n

Staying Away is the Best Precaution<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For this reason, debates about a general mask requirement, as was held regionally, are pretty pointless. In the open air, the risk of infection is negligible as long as you keep your distance: Keeping a\u00a0good\u00a0distance is the best way to keep yourself healthy at the moment. People with pre-existing conditions are well advised to get a professional protective mask with a respiratory filter. But here, too, it is important to observe safety rules\u00a0as\u00a0wearing a mouth-nose mask can actually be dangerous\u00a0if you use them incorrectly.\u00a0Improper\u00a0use does\u00a0occur as\u00a0many people\u00a0who\u00a0often use the mask, do not\u00a0check or\u00a0adjust\u00a0their fit.<\/h4>\n

Wearing a Mask Cor<\/strong>rectly\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Often you\u00a0can\u00a0see people\u00a0putting\u00a0their mask under their chin\u00a0when they are not around people\u00a0and pull it in front of their face again in a supposed \u201cdangerous situation\u201d. This is\u00a0counter-productive, because you can catch the coronavirus with a smear infection. You\u00a0should act as you would normally if you were not wearing a mask and\u00a0should not touch\u00a0it until you are safe to remove it. Always\u00a0wash your hands after removal. Where, in the past few weeks German companies have started mask production out of necessity, the FFP masks have always been made on a large scale in China. There are now 110 million masks\u00a0being manufactured\u00a0a day, compared to only 20 million in early February. 3000 factories are said to be\u00a0creating masks, including corporations like BYD, the market leader in electric cars, and Foxconn, a well-known company that otherwise produces for Apple. Observers assume that China’s mask production will increase tenfold this year compared to 2019. A bitter insight from this situation at the moment\u00a0is that\u00a0Europe can hardly protect itself without China. Shopping in China is not that easy, even in a globalized world. You have to know the companies, suppliers and processes in China. The order is processed mainly through purchasing agencies that do business in China. Anyone who orders there must be familiar with DIN standards and protection classes, but many customers lack the specialist knowledge and the ability to check the quality of the goods, as Villingen-Schwenningen is now doing\u00a0with\u00a0“OnePointZero” on site.<\/h4>\n

If you order\u00a0thousands of\u00a0masks\u00a0without\u00a0prior\u00a0knowledge\u00a0of ordering in Asia,\u00a0you may\u00a0end up with\u00a0inferior\u00a0product\u00a0or in the worst case – no\u00a0product\u00a0at all. Municipalities as corporations under public law also face another insurmountable hurdle: for legal reasons, they cannot make an advance payment.\u00a0However, this is\u00a0what the Chinese insist on\u00a0as they want at least 50\u00a0percent\u00a0in advance, many even\u00a0require\u00a0the\u00a0full\u00a0purchase price. For this reason, cities and districts, like VS and the\u00a0Schwarzwald-Baar\u00a0district,\u00a0that\u00a0have to equip their clinics, are currently mostly dependent on commercial agencies. Few are as lucky as Villingen-Schwenningen,\u00a0who\u00a0have such\u00a0good contacts.\u00a0There are dealers from the Middle East who ordered\u00a0900 million masks\u00a0through\u00a0China and\u00a0a\u00a0fully utilized\u00a0production\u00a0process was put in place. A German city administration, however, has little chance\u00a0of this.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Different Prices Every Day\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Because demand is currently booming, the Chinese are changing their prices practically every day. Before the corona crisis, simple mouth-nose protection,\u00a0without a protection class,\u00a0cost about five cents each. Now,\u00a0we are at a price of 50 cents each, sometimes even more.\u00a0Manufacturers are already making money on masks without the increased price, because after all, they are disposable products. The masks must be disposed of after a few hours, otherwise they will no longer\u00a0effectively\u00a0protect\u00a0wearer.<\/h4>\n
